Waksman vs. Schatz

-What are some of the goals that motivate scientists to discover new things? 

The goal to help people and find cures for sickness. Scientists are always striving to find new things and help people in different ways.
-What are some things that would lead one scientist to receive more credit for a discovery than another?

If a second scientist continues the work of another scientist and finishes it he will get more credit for actually bringing it out to the public. Unless he gives credit where it is due than the second scientis will usually have more fame and credit.
-Do you think this kind of thing happens often in science?  Why or why not?

Not as much now as it would have a long time ago. Now with all the rules of plaguerism and such, people must give credit to the former owners.
-Who do you think deserves more credit for the discovery or streptomycin – Selman Waksman or Albert Schatz?  Why?
Albert Schatz because he did a lot of work and barely got much credit. Although Waksman was the man to actually show this work and ultimatley get the Nobel Peace Prize is unfair to Schatz.

B Virus (Cercopithecine herpesvirus 1) Infection

1.  Why is this virus interesting to you?

It stood out because it is something i’ve never heard of.

2.  What are the symptoms of infection?

This infection is unusual in humans but will contain encephalomyelitis and almost always kill an unmedicated victim.

3.  What are some preventions and treatments for this disease?

Avoid jobs dealing with monkeys. There are certain medicine that help.

4.  Which vaccines exist for this viral infection (if any exist)?

There is no vaccine.

Flu

1.  Why is this virus interesting to you?

Because I wanted to learn more about the flu.

2.  What are the symptoms of infection?

Fever, weakness, coughing, runny nose, vomiting and more. Basically a cold but just heightened to an extreme level.

3.  What are some preventions and treatments for this disease?

There is a vaccine now that you can take every few years.

4.  Which vaccines exist for this viral infection (if any exist)?

The flu vaccine.

Q Fever

1.  Why is this virus interesting to you?

Interesting name.

2.  What are the symptoms of infection?

High fevers, severe headache, sore throat, nausea, chills, sweats, and chest / abdominal pains.

3.  What are some preventions and treatments for this disease?

Drink only pasteurized milk, wash your hands, take the vaccine.

4.  Which vaccines exist for this viral infection (if any exist)?

A C. Burnetti vaccine.

 

Blog Reflection #1

- What did you learn this week, and how did you learn it?

     I learned about acids and bases. I learned this through pictures of the scale and the powerpoint. The lab was helpful also. I learned about adhesion and cohesion. I learned this through notes and pictures. I also learned about bonds this week. Covalent bonds, Ionic bonds, and blanking out on the rest. I learned these through the pictures and notes. Lastly, I learned about polar and nonpolar charges.

- What was fun or interesting for you this week, and why?

     I thought the labs were fun becuase it was more interactive and hands-on than just writing notes. I think it helped me better understand the information from the labs. Such as the H2O Olympics and the Acids + Bases Lab.

Human Impact on the Environment

1. How is Earth’s human population changing?

In undevolped countries, population is rising greatly.

2. Where are most of these changes in population taking place?

Most of these changes are taking place in undeveloped countries because that’s where the rise of population is.

3. What effects do these changes in population have on Earth’s ecosystems (air, water, soil, plant andanimal species, fuel, etc.)?

These changes in population will eventually come to a point where the Earth doesn’t have enough resources for everyone.

4. What are world leaders and governments doing to address human impact on the Earth?

We are addressing this problem and bringing it to our attention. We are advancing in many green systems such as wind energy and solar energy instead of fossil fuels.

5. How do lifestyles of individuals effect Earth’s ecosystems?

Certain individuals and places may be consuming to much than the reproduction rate. If the U.S.A is eating too much meat than we can produce than problems arise.

7. What are some things you or your family could do to reduce your ecological footprint?

Take mass transportation and watch the foods we eat. We could also turn everything off when we leave the house.

Turn off the lights after leaving the room. Reduce the amount of meats we eat. Try not to throw away food. Use mass transportation instead of a car for each person.
